Bush Family Name History: The Bush name is derived from where a man once lived and is local in origin it is belived to have come from England , and simply denotes a man who lived near or at a bush. The old English word “busc” meaning bush or thicket this is where the name Bush derived from. Early records of the name in England include a reference to Richard de la Busce in the Pipe Rolls for Yorkshire in 1181 and Henry del Busk in the Rotuli Hundredorum for Norfolk in 1275. In 1305 Roger Buske appears in Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and Richard Bussh in the Feed of Fines for Suffolk in 1309.

In medieval times, a bush or a bunch of Ivy tied to the end of a pole and raised outside of a shop designated a wine tavern, thus the name may have been occupational and denote a wine merchant. The signs known as “ale stakes” were often projected over the road in an attempt to impede travellers and it became necessary to introduce laws regulating their lenght. Hence that old English saying “Good wines needs no bush”.

In the United States records show that a Mr John Bush travelled to the New Colonies in 1635, having taken oath of Allegience and Supremacy to the King before embarking. Some of the notable bearers of this name in the United States today is the two Presidents of The United States.

George Herbert Walker Bush, born in Milton Massachusetts in 1924 and electted President of the United States in 1988. His son George W Bush Jr aka (President George Duby‘a Bush)  is currently President of the United States at the time of posting in Feb 2008.

The Bush Family Crest Ring would have a “goats head” on it.
