Sullivan Family History is: This old Irish name  is of patronymic origin and is derived from the first name of the father or an ancestor of the bearer and is an Anglicisation of the old Irish name : O’Suileabhain” meaning one eye.  Suil means “eye”, and amhain means “one”. The name is often refered to as “hawk eye” by the scholars and learned men.

The O’Sullivans were originally from Tipperary but in the invassion of 1172 they were driven westwards  by the Anglo-Normans. They became one of the leading families of the Munster Eoghannacht which means in English the descendants of Eoghan.

Of the two Septs that they divided into the O’Sullivan Mor from Kenmare Bay were the most powerful and the other one was the O’Sullivan Beare from Bantry. One of the most powerful bearer’s of this mighty name was Donal O’Sullivan the hero of the siege of Dunboy (1560-1618) he was only 58 years old when he died.
