Heraldic Shield

The field of the shield, and the charges placed upon it,are all coloured, and the colours are classified into two metals, five colours and nine furs all of which are termed tinctures. The only exception is when some charges are displayed as “proper” meaning they are coloured in their natural colours: example an oak tree will have green leaves and a brown trunk.

The two metals used in Heraldry are gold and silver or in Norman French are referred to as OR and Argent. French as some ofyou may know was the language of the gentlemen and therefore heraldic gifts were quiet popular among these gentlemen..Latin was the language of the scholar and the churchman.
