Family Seal Rings

Jewelry has been used for personal adornment since prehistoric times - for tens of thousands of years. Heraldic jewelry hasn't been around quite that long, having "only" existed since the feudal period of the Middle Ages, many centuries ago. In those long-ago times, a noble or knight going into battle would decorate his armour and shield with his heraldic coat-of-arms or badge.

The use of heraldry in this way quickly identified him to both his allies and his enemies on the battlefield. Sometimes, for purposes more related to personal vanity or pride, he would also decorate some of his other possessions with his device or badge - including the jewelry that he wore.

Some specific types of heraldic jewelry were created for practical reasons, although their main use now is as a decorative fashion accessory. A prime example of this is the family seal ring. During the Middle Ages, family seal rings (also called signet rings) made for the nobility were engraved with a heraldic emblem such as a crest or coat-of-arms on the surface of the top of the ring. The image was designed in reverse (like a mirror-image), so that when the top of the ring was pressed into hot wax that had been dripped onto the closure of a letter or document, it created an image of the crest or arms that sealed the paper closed when the wax cooled. The seal with the heraldic crest or coat-of-arms identified the sender of a letter and assured the authenticity of the document.

Although the need to guarantee authenticity in this manner is long gone, some individuals still use family seal rings for that purpose even today. People who use family seal rings for sealing documents, together with those who wear them purely as heraldic jewelry, realize that they are a symbolic link to the past and to their family history. In
countries where the noble class still exists they can also be a status symbol - they serve as an instant identifier of the wearer's level in society. Even today, a fine family seal ring is a uniquely appropriate gift for a man or woman of high accomplishment or high social status.

Family seal rings and other types of heraldic jewelry can all be decorated with beautifully engraved or etched family seals, crests, shields or coats-of-arms. They are often made of gold, silver or platinum, and the arresting appearance of high-quality pieces, with their intricate detail, will captivate anyone who sees them. Their visual appeal can be enhanced even more if they are enamelled with vivid colors or set with precious gemstones.

Family seal rings have become extremely popular because of their beauty and the history that they signify. The pageantry and the magnificence of the Medieval world are quickly evoked by these beautiful rings with their highly stylized, intricate designs. A family seal ring is perfect for commemorating a significant event in a person's life, such as a graduation or reaching the age of majority. When presented in connection with such an event, a family seal ring instils a sense of history and continuity of family heritage in both the giver and the recipient.
