Fashion Jewelry
Jewelry can be made out of just about any material known to man, including precious metals such as gold, sterling silver and platinum. It can also be made out of other much less expensive metals such as silver plate, vermeil, brass and pewter.

It can be inlaid or inset with precious and semi-precious gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies or topaz, or with synthetic or imitation gemstones such as cubic zirconia or rhinestones. Wood, beads, seashells, glass, bone, pearls and ivory can also be made into jewelry.
Although it can still be used for its original purposes - fastening clothes together and as a way to store and display wealth - jewelry is now used almost exclusively as a fashion accessory, for personal adornment. It can also be used to indicate membership in a group, such as a Masonic ring, or it can be used to denote a particular status, such as a wedding ring that indicates married status.
There are two major categories of jewelry. The first category is often referred to as fine jewelry. It is high quality jewelry that is usually quite expensive since it is made of precious metals, sometimes inlaid or set with precious or semi-precious gems. The other major type of jewelry is fashion jewelry, which is sometimes called "costume jewelry." Fashion jewelry can be high quality, but is usually made of relatively inexpensive metals, glass, plastic, wood or lucite. It is sometimes set with polished stones, glass beads or simulated, artificial or imitation "gems" such as cubic zirconia or rhinestones. Costume jewelry is often, but not always, relatively inexpensive. But it is often quite striking in appearance, and in some ways it can actually make a much more dramatic fashion statement than fine jewelry.
Fashion jewelry can also be handmade, but it is more commonly mass-produced in a factory. Handmade pieces of fashion jewelry tend to be much more unusual, much more striking and much more collectible than factory pieces. Even though fashion jewelry is usually not as expensive as fine jewelry, some vintage or antique pieces of fashion jewelry are quite collectible and have become valuable over time. A good example of this is the fashion jewelry made during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s. And even though it can cost much less than fine jewelry, fashion jewelry definitely makes a statement about the person who is wearing it. It can be traditional in design, for those who like a "classic" look. Or it can be quite trendy, modern and offbeat, either due to its design or to the materials that are used.
Fashion jewelry for any budget can be found in many different locations, from estate sales to department stores to flea markets. And nowadays, it's easy to buy fashion jewelry online. Make a fashion statement with a striking piece of fashion jewelry.
