Body Jewelry

Many people believe that body jewelry is a relatively recent phenomenon that has only become popular as recently as 10 or 20 years ago.  Many also think that the people who wear body jewelry are all young, in their teens or twenties at the most.

Still others think that those who wear body jewelry are all part of the gay or punk community.

Body Jewelery

Those people would be wrong on all counts.  In fact, body jewelry has existed since prehistoric times, and in addition to being popular in the so-called civilized world, it continues to be worn in some primitive societies today - especially in Africa and in the South Pacific.   And although it has fairly recently become very popular among young people around the world, it is indeed worn by people of all ages, most of which are neither gay nor a part of punk culture.  As a matter of fact, the extremely common pieces of jewelry known as pierced earrings - worn by women (and some men) of all ages in many different cultures - are actually a type of body jewelry that is worn by creating a small hole in the ear lobe.  And pierced earrings are certainly a part of mainstream culture.

In addition to being a type of personal adornment like any other piece of jewelry, body jewelry is sometimes considered to be a form of "body art."  Simple silver, gold or surgical steel studs, beads, earrings, and closed or open rings are most commonly used as body jewelry, but any piece of body jewelry can be adorned with precious or semi-precious gems such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, etc., or with synthetic stones such as rhinestones or cubic zirconia.  Body jewelry can be worn on various portions of the body, from the very common pierced earrings worn on ear lobes to the much more unusual, such as the navel, eyebrow, nose septum or nostril, tongue, lips, nipples and even genitalia.

The public's attitude toward body jewelry - especially when worn on more unusual portions of the body - is very divided.  Some people see it as being somewhat distasteful, but others think of body jewelry as being a form of self-expression or a type of art.  Others view body jewelry as a form of "modern primitivism" which harkens back to ancient, and perhaps better, times. Still others view it as being a youthful, trendy phenomenon that has swept around the world.  But there is no doubt - the popularity of body jewelry is ever-increasing, with no end in sight.

Body jewelry can be worn as a symbol of membership in a particular sub-culture, such as the gay community, the punk community or "being hip."   Or as with pierced earrings, it can be worn simply as a fashion accessory or adornment with no undercurrent of being anything else.

Body jewelry can be a bold and sometimes controversial fashion statement.  Often a strong conversation piece, it is available for purchase in a variety of different locations, both online and "in person."  Make a statement about yourself.  Buy some body jewelry and join the wave that's sweeping around the world.
